Why Are Fitness Influencers Always Ill?

They eat healthily and exercise regularly, plus — they look great. So why are they always sick? There’s a crack in the façade…

At the height of my obsession with fitness, I was always ill. It was 2016, and fitness influencers had taken over social media. I tried everything they did, and as a result, I was vegan, training seven days a week, and trying new fads every other month that involved some type of new restriction.

In hindsight, it’s no wonder I was sick. I was anemic, anxious, and absolutely fanatical about fitness. I would be tired all day, regardless of how much I slept. My hair was falling out and I couldn’t focus on tasks. I would drink pre-workout just to push myself through a workout, and I would battle my internal hunger cues to make sure I “stayed on track” with my macros.

Now that I’ve overcome this toxic relationship with fitness, I can see things in the fitness industry for how they are.

Many fitness influencers are always sick. Some, despite looking seemingly healthy, end up hospitalized for exhaustion, have fertility issues, or get diagnosed with acute or chronic conditions out of nowhere.
