I’ve Been Freelance Writing For 8 Years (with No Formal Writing Experience) — Here’s My Advice

No one will be honest with you about this reality. But if you’re an aspiring freelance writer, you need to hear this.

I have been receiving messages on social media and through my website from aspiring health writers enquiring about how I paved my way in this industry. Prior to the pandemic, freelance careers weren’t considered “careers.” In my experience, when I told people I was a freelance writer, they’d often ask in disbelief, “full-time?!”.

I’m happy that I developed a client base and sufficient experience in the industry before this boom, because there has definitely been an influx that saturates an already saturated freelance market.

This isn’t to say that aspiring freelance writers have no hope — conversely, there’s always abundance and room for everyone. I don’t have a scarcity mindset when it comes to work: if you deserve it, it’ll come.

But my advice to aspiring freelance health writers is this: don’t pursue this career if you’re “passionate about wellness.” While this may sound like the perfect impetus, it’s one of a million. In 2023, who isn’t…
