I perhaps should have rephrased that as '99% of the time you need to be in a calorie deficit to lose weight'. I read your article and your point is definitely true in the case of keto or some metabolic conditions - but in 99% of cases, yes, you do absolutely have to be in a caloric deficit to lose weight. At a population level, this is not relevant to include.
